Program Overview
Your first year—in New York City
The New York City Scholars program offers students a bold and immersive start to their undergraduate journey at Northeastern University’s New York City campus. Designed for students who are eager to engage deeply with both their academics and their environment, the program provides a unique opportunity to live and learn in Manhattan during the first year of college.
The program is intentionally designed to help students grow as learners and individuals. During their first year, students develop the skills to navigate college life while becoming thoughtful contributors and engaged innovators. Through this experience, they build independence, confidence, and a strong foundation for future academic and professional success.
New York City Scholars are ambitious, curious, and driven. By beginning their Northeastern journey in this distinctive way, they gain early exposure to real-world experiences that help shape their goals and accelerate their path forward.
Living there
As a New York City Scholar, students spend a full academic year in a residential, academically rigorous program rooted in one of the world’s most dynamic cities. Beyond the classroom, the city itself becomes an extension of the learning experience, offering unparalleled access to industries, culture, and professional networks.
History
The New York City Scholars program was launched in 2025 as part of Northeastern University’s broader commitment to expanding experiential learning across its global network of campuses. As the university grew beyond its Boston roots, it sought new ways to provide students with meaningful, place-based educational experiences from the very start of their college careers.
Launched to take advantage of New York City’s global influence across industries such as finance, media, technology, and the arts, the program reflects Northeastern’s mission to integrate academic study with real-world engagement. By situating first-year students at Northeastern’s NYC campus in Manhattan, the program allows them to immediately connect their coursework to the professional and cultural landscape around them.
Since its inception, the New York City Scholars program has continued to evolve, supporting students as they build strong academic foundations while exploring one of the most vibrant cities in the world. It remains a key pathway for students seeking an innovative and immersive introduction to the Northeastern experience.
